For three decades, the Karlsburg Clinic – Heart and Diabetes Centre has been one of the leading institutions for heart, vascular and metabolic diseases in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. More than 8,000 patients are treated there every year. The clinic specialises in interventional aortic valve replacement (TAVI), cardiac surgery, electrophysiology and telecardiology for advanced heart failure.
As a result of the merger, these areas of expertise will be pooled with the university's cardiac medicine department at the DZHK site in Greifswald and supplemented by additional capacities. This will create a visible beacon of research and teaching with national and international appeal.
Minister of Science Bettina Martin:
"A medical beacon with strong impact is being created here. The merger is a double gain: the outstanding expertise in cardiology, vascular surgery, and endocrinology at the Western Pomerania site will be further strengthened. This will, first, improve healthcare provision for cardiac and diabetes patients in the region. And second, it will significantly enhance opportunities for medical research and teaching. With the merger, University Medicine Greifswald can continue university-based cardiovascular medicine in its entirety and thus also secure its role as a site of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK)."
