As people age, blood cells carrying genetic alterations can expand within the body. These include clonal haematopoiesis (CH) and, in men, mosaic loss of the Y chromosome in a proportion of blood cells (mLOY). Drawing on data from around 185,000 men, the study shows that both alterations are associated with an increased risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation. When CH and mLOY occur together, the risk of heart failure rises further still. The findings could help to enable more precise assessment of individual cardiovascular risk in future.
