Awards and Grants

Dr. Julius Kaemmel (German Heart Center of Charité) was awarded the Dr. Rusche Project Grant, worth 60,000 euros.

Prof. Roland Tilz (University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein/Lübeck Campus) has been elected to the EHRA committee. The EHRA is part of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and one of the leading European professional societies in the field of cardiac arrhythmias.

Prof. Mahir Karakas (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, UKE) and Prof. Tanja Zeller (University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein and the University of Lübeck) are to receive around 8 million euros under the European funding programme Horizon Europe. The research funding is granted for the international research project CURE-SHOCK, which is investigating a new therapeutic approach for patients with life-threatening circulatory shock.

Dr Kami Alexander Pekayvaz (LMU Munich) was awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize in 2026.

Prof Heribert Schunkert (TUM Clinic, German Heart Centre, Munich) has been awarded the 2026 Anitschkow Prize – the highest scientific honour bestowed by the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS).

Prof. Carsten Tschöpe (Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité) has been elected to the ESC Nominating Commitee, representing National Cardiac Societies.

Prof. Roland Tilz (University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein/Lübeck Campus) has been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Heart Foundation.

Dr. Remco Megens (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany), together with international partners, has been awarded funding under the ICRPA 2026 scheme for the research project “PATCH – Platelets as a New Approach to the Treatment of Cerebral Aneurysms”.

Dr Jana Grune (German Heart Centre at Charité, Germany), together with international partners, has been awarded a grant as part of the ICRPA 2026 programme for the research project “AD-MI – The impact of ageing on organ dysfunction following acute myocardial infarction”.

Professor Laura Zelarayan is the new Director of the Institute for Experimental and Translational Cardiology at Justus Liebig University Giessen.
