Awards and Grants

Prof. Norbert Hübner (Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC)) has been elected, along with 70 other researchers, to the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), a lifetime honour recognising outstanding research achievements.

Prof. Holger Gerhardt (Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine) is one of 71 researchers who have been elected to the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO). The nomination is considered a lifetime honour for outstanding research achievements.

Prof. Leo Kurian (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main) has been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept Grant for the project "Translation-Guided RNA Engineering Platform for Cardiac Haploinsufficiency" (acronym: TRANSLATE).

Prof. Thomas Eschenhagen (University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf) has won the Distinguished Leader Award 2026 from the International Society for Heart Research.

Prof. Renate Schnabel (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf) will be the new chair of the Council on Stroke of the European Society of Cardiology beginning in August.

Dr. Julius Kaemmel (German Heart Center of Charité) was awarded the Dr. Rusche Project Grant, worth 60,000 euros.

Prof. Roland Tilz (University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein/Lübeck Campus) has been elected to the EHRA committee. The EHRA is part of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and one of the leading European professional societies in the field of cardiac arrhythmias.

Prof. Mahir Karakas (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, UKE) and Prof. Tanja Zeller (University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein and the University of Lübeck) are to receive around 8 million euros under the European funding programme Horizon Europe. The research funding is granted for the international research project CURE-SHOCK, which is investigating a new therapeutic approach for patients with life-threatening circulatory shock.

Dr Kami Alexander Pekayvaz (LMU Munich) was awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize in 2026.

Prof Heribert Schunkert (TUM Clinic, German Heart Centre, Munich) has been awarded the 2026 Anitschkow Prize – the highest scientific honour bestowed by the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS).
