Prof Dr Tanja Zeller heads the Institute of Cardiogenetics at the Lübeck Campus

Since 1 January 2025, Prof. Dr Tanja Zeller has been Head of the Institute of Cardiogenetics at the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck Campus. The renowned bioscientist brings new impetus for research and translation in cardiogenetics.

‘I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the institute into a new phase with a strong team,’ says Zeller. The institute is known for its pioneering work in the genetic analysis of cardiovascular diseases, to which Jeanette Erdmann (†), the former director of the institute, made a significant contribution.

Combining basic research with patient-centred application

Zeller, a biologist by training, not only wants to continue the existing lines of research, but also expand them in a targeted manner. ‘With a view to potential clinical application, my focus is on the targeted translation of our genetic and molecular findings - from the functional characterisation of molecular markers to the evaluation of their potential as therapeutic target structures.’ She combines modern omics technologies, bioinformatics methods and molecular and epidemiological analyses to develop systems medicine concepts.

She places particular emphasis on the comprehensive investigation of molecular (bio)markers. ‘If we identify a protein as a potential disease marker, it is crucial that we can also detect it in the blood in order to be able to use this marker clinically in the long term.’

A milestone in her work to date is the development of an innovative clinical algorithm for diagnosing heart attacks, which she helped to create together with her clinical and biostatistical colleagues. She was particularly enthusiastic that this success led to a spin-off in which she is involved. The practical applicability as a medical product is currently being tested.

Strongly networked in research and clinical practice

Around 20 scientists currently work at the Institute of Cardiogenetics. The close collaboration with the clinics of the University Heart Centre in Lübeck and Zeller's extensive network form a strong foundation for interdisciplinary research. ‘It was important to me that there was a connection to the clinic - that enables us to achieve real translation,’ she emphasises.

Within the DZHK, Zeller contributes her experience not only scientifically, but also structurally. ‘The DZHK has strongly characterised my career - from group leader to DZHK professorship to today's Institute Director. I would like to actively use my experience and network to promote young scientists’.

Entering a new phase with enthusiasm

Before moving to Lübeck, Zeller worked at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, where she was involved in committee work alongside her research - including as Equal Opportunities Officer. She is the mother of three children and appreciates Lübeck's close-knit campus structure and family-friendliness. ‘I came here with a lot of enthusiasm and am looking forward to developing the institute further together with the staff.’
