Workplaces for around 380 people will be created on a floor space of over 6,600 square metres. This will enable the six departments of the Institute of Community Medicine, Community Dentistry, the central office of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Clinical Cancer Registry and Greifswald's shares in the German Centers for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) and Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) to be brought together under one roof.

Important research for the model region

In the research building, the scientists will investigate the increasing incidence of diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases in connection with demographic change. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is considered a model region in this regard. ‘The new research building will provide the scientific basis for a patient-oriented and sustainable healthcare system of tomorrow,’ said Professor Wolfgang Hoffmann, Managing Director of the Institute of Community Medicine, on the new centre's mission.

‘The new building should be completed by 2026. The client is the state building and property office. The building is named after the American cardiologist and epidemiologist William B. Kannel, who is best known for his involvement in the Framingham Study.
