Clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential and mortality in coronary artery disease (European Heart Journal)

The study investigates how clonal haematopoiesis affects the risk of death in patients with coronary artery disease. Blood samples from more than 8,600 individuals were genetically analysed. People carrying these mutations had a clearly increased risk of dying within three years. Additional analyses showed that especially TET2 mutations enhance inflammatory activity in macrophages and lead to less stable atherosclerotic plaques. Clonal haematopoiesis is therefore not just a marker, but contributes to disease progression in cardiovascular conditions.
