Cardiac myocyte-secreted cAMP exerts paracrine action via adenosine receptor activation, doi: 10.1172/JCI74349, (DZHK-Authors: Ahles, Dendorfer, Engelhardt)

A team of authors led by Stefan Engelhardt from the DZHK partner site Munich report in The Journal of Clinical Investigation that, following export from the muscle cells, the “intracellular” second messenger cAMP exerts paracrine action as a messenger substance for intracellular signaling. According to the authors, this is the first study to demonstrate that extracellular cAMP has cardioprotective effects on the myocardium.
