The consolidation will enable scientific resources to be concentrated in a targeted manner in order to further strengthen cooperation in the north.

As part of the restructuring process, a joint site spokesperson was elected for the first time. Prof. Dr Tanja Zeller (University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck Campus/University of Lübeck) will take on the role of spokesperson for the DZHK's northern location. Prof. Dr Renate Schnabel (Hamburg) and Prof. Dr Jens Fielitz (Greifswald) were elected as deputy spokespersons. The term of office is three years.

The new north campus  brings together researchers from four university locations with complementary expertise along the entire translational chain. Key areas of focus include heart failure research, cardiomyopathies, immunocardiology, heart regeneration, cardiovascular ageing and the interface between the heart and brain. The site is characterised by the close integration of molecular approaches, clinical research and patient-oriented studies.

With the merge of the northern German locations, the DZHK is now organised across six location and represented in ten federal states. A total of 27 university and non-university partner institutions are affiliated with the DZHK.
