The aim of this translational study is to research the underlying pathophysiology of cardiac wasting-induced cardiomyopathy in advanced stage cancer patients. A comprehensive assessment including cardiac MRI, biobanking and cardiorespiratory reflex physiology will be performed in 96 advanced stage cancer patients (without severe CV disease or active infection) and compared to 24 healthy controls and 48 patients with heart failure (HF) (all similar age and a 50:50 male/female ratio). The status of all patients and controls will be reassessed after 4 and 8 months. This project will provide new insights for further translational research projects and clinical therapeutic developments in cardio-oncology.
